Introduction to the process

How does the GCSE Science exam process work?

Need to book a GCSE science exam or plan a resit science GCSE? Pass keeps the process clear from the first enquiry through to exam day. We will help you understand the options, choose between Edexcel IGCSE or AQA Science, the Single Award and Double Award, the Foundation or Higher Tier, and get your booking moving.

GCSE science resit exams are available in the summer series, with your papers taken in person at a local Pass exam centre. Before sitting your papers, JCQ's written exam guidance explains the conduct rules candidates are expected to follow on exam day. The qualification is open to external candidates aged 16 and over, and Pass manages the exam arrangements for you. For a wider overview of private candidate entries across subjects, Pass's GCSE exam booking page explains how GCSE exam booking works.

Speak to our GCSE exam team today and we will talk through the right route for your circumstances, including exam only and Exam + Course options where available.

4 Receive your results

GCSE results are published on a nationally confirmed date each year: for summer sittings this is typically the third Thursday in August, when grades go live across all subjects and exam boards simultaneously.

As a private candidate sitting GCSE Science, your results will be released through your exam centre. It is worth checking with them before results day to find out how they handle this, as it varies: some centres require collection in person, while others will send results by email or post.

5 Take the next step. It all starts with Pass.

Use your GCSE Science qualification to support progression into college, university, an apprenticeship, or a career where science knowledge is valued. If you are still comparing wider study routes, Pass's online GCSEs page gives a broader overview of flexible GCSE study and exam options.

Find Your Starting Level

Initial Assessment

When you enrol on our online GCSE Science course, you'll start with a short Initial Assessment to establish the level you're currently working at across biology, chemistry and physics. This provides a quick and accurate snapshot of your existing science knowledge, giving you a clear picture of where you stand before diving into your revision.

The assessment covers a broad range of core GCSE science skills across all three disciplines, enabling the system to pinpoint your strengths and flag any areas that may need extra attention. By identifying these gaps early, the course can point you towards the most relevant starting topics and ensure your revision is focused where it will make the biggest difference.

Completing the Initial Assessment means your GCSE Science learning journey gets off to the right start. Rather than spending time on topics you've already mastered, you can direct your efforts towards the areas where improvement will have the greatest impact, building knowledge and confidence as you work towards your GCSE Science exam.

FAQs

Can I retake GCSE Science?

Yes. Pass can help you retake GCSE Science as a private candidate through either the Edexcel International GCSE or AQA GCSE route. You can book Single Award or Double Award with the Edexcel IGCSE and Foundation or Higher with the AQA GCSE, depending on the qualification you need.

Can I resit science GCSE as a private candidate?

Yes. GCSE resits can be arranged for private candidates aged 16 and over. Pass will guide you through the booking and arrange your place at a suitable Pass exam centre.

When can I sit a GCSE Science exam?

The IGCSE Science exam is offered in both the Summer and November series, while the GCSE Science exam is offered in Summer only. Both exam boards have separate dates for the biology, chemistry and physics papers. Pass will confirm the exact dates for your chosen qualification before your booking is finalised.

Can I take a GCSE Science exam online?

No. GCSE Science exams are not taken online because they must be sat in person under exam conditions. Pass can still support your preparation for your GCSEs online through the GCSE Science course, while your papers are completed at an in-person exam centre.

Is there a GCSE Science resit option for adults?

Yes. Adult learners can book a GCSE science resit with Pass as private candidates. This route is suitable if you need science for college, university, teacher training, healthcare pathways or career progression.

Which exam boards do you offer?

Pass offers both Edexcel International GCSE Science and the AQA GCSE Science. The available options are Single Award Science (4SS0), Double Award Science (4SD0), Foundation Tier Science (8464) and Higher Tier Science (8464).

What is the pass mark for the GCSE Science exam?

Pass marks vary each year because grade boundaries are set by the exam board after papers have been marked. Pass will help you understand the qualification structure, but the final grade boundary is confirmed by Edexcel or AQA.

Where will I sit my exam?

Your exam will be sat in person at a Pass-approved exam centre. Once your booking is in progress, Pass will confirm the venue details and any key instructions for your papers.

What is a fast-track GCSE Science qualification?

A fast-track GCSE Science qualification means preparing for and sitting your exam in a shorter timeframe than a traditional school route. Many learners use this route when they need a recognised science qualification quickly.

Can I access free revision materials?

Yes. Pass can direct learners to free GCSE Science revision materials, and the Exam + Course option gives structured online support with detailed lessons, practice questions and mock exams.

Is there a practical component?

No separate practical endorsement is required for the Edexcel IGCSE Science qualification. Practical skills and scientific method can still be assessed through written questions in the exam papers. The AQA GCSE qualification does require a practical component. Feel free to contact us if you have any questions.

What is the difference between Single Award and Double Award Science?

Single Award Science gives one GCSE science qualification and has three shorter papers. Double Award Science is worth two GCSEs and has three longer papers covering biology, chemistry and physics in more depth.
