As the course is fully online, you can fit your studies around work, family and other commitments. Is the diploma recognised by universities?
Yes. The Access to HE Diploma is a recognised Level 3 qualification awarded by a QAA-recognised Access Validating Agency and designed to support progression into higher education. It carries UCAS tariff points and is accepted by many universities offering education, youth work and child development-related degrees. However, every university sets its own entry requirements, so it is important to check that your chosen university and course accept the diploma before applying.
How is the course assessed?
The diploma is assessed through coursework rather than final examinations. Most units are completed via written assignments, though some may include alternative assessment methods such as presentations. To gain the qualification, you must meet all required assessment criteria across every unit. Your work is marked by unit tutors, internally verified, externally moderated, and formally approved before the diploma is awarded.

The diploma is designed to be flexible, allowing you to study from home around work, family and other commitments, and progress at a pace that suits you. Completion times vary depending on how quickly you work, with learners wanting a fast track online Diploma typically finishing in 6 to 9 months, while those working at a standard pace usually take around 9 to 12 months.
Your Independent Learning Plan will be generated to guide your progress and keep you on track. Depending on your circumstances, you may also have the option to move ahead more quickly or request extensions or temporary study freezes if needed.
How much tutor support will I receive?
You will receive tutor support throughout the diploma. Your dedicated diploma tutor provides guidance across the course and helps you stay organised and confident in your studies. Specialist unit tutors handle marking assignments and giving feedback for each subject area. Tutor support is provided according to the requirements and arrangements for each unit, so it is not unlimited and is not available 24/7.
Do I need any qualifications to enrol?
The minimum age to enrol is 16, though the course is generally recommended for learners aged 19 and over. No A Levels or prior Level 3 qualifications are required to start the diploma. However, most universities expect GCSE English and Maths at grade 4/C or above, or equivalent qualifications, when applying for education and child-related degree programmes. If you do not yet have these, you can complete Functional Skills qualifications alongside or before your diploma. Alternatively, full online GCSE courses and GCSE exam bookings are available in subjects including GCSE Maths and GCSE English.
What qualifications do I need to work in education, youth work or child development?
The qualifications needed depend on the career path you choose. Many roles in education, youth work and child development require a university degree or recognised professional qualification. Universities often ask for a Level 3 qualification such as A Levels or an Access to HE Diploma, alongside GCSE English and Maths at grade 4/C or above or accepted equivalents.
Some careers, particularly those involving work with children or vulnerable people, may also require an enhanced DBS check and additional placement or safeguarding requirements depending on the university course or profession.
