4 Get your diploma
Unlike many traditional qualifications, the Access to HE Education diploma does not have a single results day. The course is completed through assignments, which are marked and graded throughout your studies as you finish each unit.
To achieve the Access to Higher Education Diploma, you need to complete 60 credits in total:
- 15 ungraded credits from study skills-based units
- 45 graded credits from academic subject units
Once your final assignments have been completed, the diploma must go through internal verification, external moderation and awarding body approval before your qualification can be officially awarded.
Once awarded, your nationally recognised Level 3 qualification can be used to support your UCAS application. The Access Validating Agency can also share your results directly with UCAS, helping universities verify your achievement during the admissions process.

FAQs
What is the Access to HE Education Diploma and what can I do with it?
The Access to HE Education Diploma is a nationally recognised Level 3 qualification, aimed primarily at adult learners seeking to move into higher education. It is often taken as an alternative to A Levels for university entry, though specific entry requirements differ depending on the university and course. Completing the diploma can open the door to degree programmes and higher education courses in areas such as teaching, primary education, education studies, child development, youth work and other related fields.
It is also a popular access to primary education and access course to primary teaching route, supporting progression into primary and secondary teaching degrees.
You may also see it described as an access to teaching course.
You can find out more about how it works with our Access to HE Diploma Handbook.
How long does the diploma take to complete?
The time it takes to complete the diploma depends on the pace you set and how quickly you complete the required tasks. Learners wanting a fast track online diploma can often finish within 6 to 9 months, while those following a standard pace usually complete it in 9 to 12 months. As the course is fully online, you can study around your existing commitments. Like all Access to HE Diplomas, it is designed to give adults equal access to education and equal access to higher education, regardless of their previous qualifications.
Once your Independent Learning Plan is generated, it provides a clear schedule to guide your progress, though you may also have the option to move ahead faster or request extensions or temporary study freezes if needed.
Is the diploma recognised by universities?
Yes. The Access to HE Diploma is a nationally recognised Level 3 qualification, awarded by a QAA-recognised Access Validating Agency, and is designed to help learners progress into higher education. It carries UCAS tariff points and is accepted by many universities as a valid route into education-related degree programmes. However, entry requirements vary between universities, so it is important that you confirm that your chosen institution and course accept this qualification before applying.
How is the course assessed?
The diploma is completed through coursework instead of final examinations. Assessment is mainly based on written assignments, though some units may include alternative formats such as presentations or reflective tasks. To gain the qualification, you must meet all of the assessment criteria across every unit. Your submissions are marked by unit tutors, undergo internal quality assurance, are externally moderated, and are formally ratified before the diploma is awarded.
Can I study around work and family commitments?
The diploma is designed to be flexible, allowing you to study from home around work, family and other commitments, and progress at a pace that suits you. Learners aiming for a fast track online diploma route often complete the programme within 6 to 9 months, while those following a standard pace typically finish in 9 to 12 months.
Your Independent Learning Plan will provide you with a structured study schedule to help manage your workload. Depending on your individual circumstances, it may also be possible to move ahead more quickly or request extensions or temporary study freezes where needed.
How much tutor support will I receive?
All learners receive tutor support throughout the diploma. Your diploma tutor offers guidance across the course and provides tutorials to help you stay organised and maintain progress. Unit tutors vary by subject area and are responsible for marking assignments and giving feedback. Tutor support follows the specific arrangements for each unit and is not unlimited or available 24/7.
Do I need any qualifications to enrol?
The minimum age to enrol is 16, though the course is generally recommended for learners aged 19 and above. No A Levels or prior Level 3 qualifications are required to start the diploma. However, most universities will expect GCSE English and GCSE Maths at grade 4/C or higher, or equivalent qualifications, when applying for a teaching or education degree. If you do not yet meet these requirements, you can complete Functional Skills qualifications alongside or before starting the diploma. Alternatively, full online GCSE courses and GCSE exam bookings are available in subjects including Maths and English.
What qualifications do I need to become a teacher?
To become a qualified teacher in the UK, you will usually need to complete a recognised degree followed by teacher training or other approved training route leading to Qualified Teacher Status (QTS). Universities and teacher training providers typically ask for a Level 3 qualification such as A Levels or an Access to HE Diploma, alongside GCSE English and GCSE Maths at grade 4/C or above. Primary teacher training courses also usually require GCSE Science at grade 4/C or above, or an accepted equivalent. Most teacher training providers also require DBS checks.
