4 Get your diploma

To achieve the Access to Higher Education Diploma, you need to complete 60 credits in total:
- 15 ungraded credits from study skills-based units
- 45 graded credits from academic subject units
After your final assignments have been completed and graded, the diploma must go through the required internal verification, external moderation and awarding body approval process before your final qualification can be issued.
Once awarded, your nationally recognised Level 3 qualification can be used to support your UCAS application. The Access Validating Agency can also share your results directly with UCAS, helping universities verify your achievement during the admissions process.

FAQs
What is the Access to HE Midwifery Diploma and what can I do with it?
The Access to HE Diploma (Nursing, Midwifery and Allied Professions) – Midwifery Pathway is a nationally recognised Level 3 qualification designed for adult learners looking to progress into a midwifery degree at university. Many universities accept Access to HE qualifications as an alternative to A Levels for UCAS applications, although entry requirements vary between institutions and courses. This is ideal for those looking to go into nursing or midwifery.
After completing the diploma, you can apply for midwifery degree programmes that lead towards registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council as a qualified midwife.
You may also see this described as an access higher education midwifery course, a midwifery access course, or an access course to higher education in nursing and midwifery.
You can find out more about how it works with our Access to HE Diploma Handbook.
How long does the diploma take to complete?
The time it takes to complete depends on the pace you set and how quickly you finish the required work. Our fast track online Diploma is typically completed within 6 to 9 months, while a more flexible pace is usually closer to 9 to 12 months.
Because the course is delivered fully online, you can study around work, childcare and other commitments. Once your Independent Learning Plan has been produced, there is a defined study schedule to help keep you on track. Depending on your circumstances, you may also be able to move through the diploma more quickly or apply for extensions or study freezes where appropriate.
Is the diploma recognised by universities?
Yes. The Access to HE Diploma is a recognised Level 3 qualification awarded by a QAA-recognised Access Validating Agency and is designed to support progression into higher education. It carries UCAS tariff points and is widely accepted by universities offering midwifery degrees as a valid Level 3 route into university study.
However, every university sets its own entry criteria, so it remains the learner’s responsibility to check that your chosen university and course accept the diploma before applying.
How is the course assessed?
Assessment is by coursework rather than final exams. Most assessment takes the form of written assignments, although some units may include other assessment formats such as presentations.
To achieve the diploma, all required assessment criteria across the units must be met. Assignments are marked by unit tutors before going through internal verification, external verification and awarding body ratification processes.
Can I study around work and family commitments?
Yes. The diploma is designed to fit around work, family life and other responsibilities, allowing you to study flexibly from home at a pace that suits your circumstances.
Our fast track online Diploma is typically completed within 6 to 9 months, while many learners choose a steadier pace of around 9 to 12 months. Once you receive your Independent Learning plan, you will follow a structured study schedule to help you stay organised and on track.
How much tutor support will I receive?
All learners receive tutor support throughout the diploma. Your diploma tutor supports you across the full qualification and provides tutorials to help you stay on track. Unit tutors change from one unit to the next and are responsible for marking assignments and giving feedback.
Tutor support is structured and delivered within the support arrangements permitted for each unit, so support is not unlimited or available 24/7.
Do I need any qualifications to enrol?
The minimum age is 16, although the diploma is recommended for learners aged 19 and over. You do not need A Levels or previous Level 3 qualifications to enrol.
However, many universities offering midwifery degrees expect applicants to hold GCSE English, GCSE Maths and often GCSE Science at grade 4/C or above, or accepted equivalents such as Functional Skills qualifications. Requirements vary between universities.
If you still need these qualifications, Pass also offers fully online Functional Skills qualifications, as well as online GCSE courses and GCSE exam booking.
What qualifications do I need to become a midwife?
To become a registered midwife in the UK, you must complete an approved midwifery degree and then register with the Nursing and Midwifery Council. Universities typically require a recognised Level 3 qualification such as A Levels or an Access to HE Diploma, alongside GCSE English, Maths and often Science at grade 4/C or above or accepted equivalents.
You will also usually need to complete an enhanced DBS check and occupational health assessment.
