This diploma splits into two distinct tracks. Students with strong GCSEs can apply to veterinary medicine degree programmes, though only a handful of UK vet schools currently accept Access qualifications - including the Royal Veterinary College, Harper and Keele Veterinary School, and the University of Surrey. For everyone else, the diploma opens doors to a strong range of animal and science-based degrees.

Veterinary Nursing

BSc Veterinary Nursing leads to registration as an RVN (Registered Veterinary Nurse), working alongside vets in practices, hospitals and specialist referral centres.

Zoology and Wildlife Conservation

BSc Zoology or Wildlife Conservation degrees lead to roles as a zoologist, animal behaviourist, conservation scientist or marine biologist.

Equine and Animal Science

Equine Science, Animal Science and Bio-Veterinary Science degrees support roles in animal management, research, equine therapy and livestock production.

Animal Welfare and Rescue

Roles such as RSPCA inspector or animal welfare officer involve investigating cruelty, rescuing animals and advising owners, often building on a Level 3 animal care background.

Agriculture and Farm Management

Agriculture degrees lead to roles in farm and livestock management, agronomy, animal nutrition and consultancy across the farming and food industries.

4 Get your diploma

Unlike many traditional qualifications, the Access to Higher Education Veterinary Science and Zoology diploma does not have a fixed results day. The course is assessed through assignments, which are marked and graded throughout your studies as you complete each unit.

To achieve the Access to Higher Education Diploma, you need to complete 60 credits in total:

  • 15 ungraded credits from study skills-based units
  • 45 graded credits from academic subject units

After your final assignments have been submitted and graded, the diploma must go through internal verification, external moderation and awarding body approval before the qualification can be officially awarded.

Once awarded, your nationally recognised Level 3 qualification can be used to support your UCAS application. The Access Validating Agency can also share your results directly with UCAS, helping universities verify your achievement during the admissions process.

5 Get into University

A good number of UK universities recognise the Access to HE Veterinary Science and Zoology Diploma across animal science, zoology and related degrees, though acceptance is generally far more limited for veterinary medicine itself. Because policies differ by course and institution, it's always worth confirming directly with your chosen university.

To help with this, we maintain a full, regularly reviewed list of universities known to accept this diploma, along with what to do if your chosen university isn't currently included.

What is the Access to HE Diploma in Veterinary Science and Zoology and what can I do with it?

The Access to HE Diploma in Veterinary Science and Zoology is a nationally recognised Level 3 qualification designed mainly for adult learners who want to progress into university-level animal, veterinary and biological science study. It is widely accepted by universities as an alternative to A Levels for UCAS applications, although entry requirements vary depending on the university and course. After completing the diploma, you may be able to apply for degrees and pursue careers in areas such as Veterinary Nursing, Zoology, Animal Science, Animal Behaviour, Wildlife Conservation and related bioscience subjects.

You can find out more about how it works with our Access to HE Diploma Handbook.

How long does the diploma take to complete?

The time it takes to complete the diploma depends on the pace you set and how quickly you complete the required work. Learners wanting a fast track online Diploma often finish within 6 to 9 months, while those following a standard pace usually complete it in 9 to 12 months. As the course is fully online, you can fit your studies around work and other commitments. Once you receive your Independent Learning Plan, a structured schedule will guide your progress, though you may also have the option to work faster or request extensions or temporary study freezes if needed.

Is the diploma recognised by universities?

Yes. The Access to HE Diploma is a recognised Level 3 qualification awarded by a QAA-recognised Access Validating Agency and designed to support progression into higher education. It carries UCAS tariff points and is accepted by many universities offering veterinary science, zoology and animal-related degree courses. However, every university sets its own entry requirements, so learners should always check that their chosen university and course accept the qualification before applying.

How is the course assessed?

The diploma is completed through coursework rather than final examinations. Assessment is mainly based on written assignments, though some units may include alternative methods, such as presentations. To achieve the qualification, you must meet all the required assessment criteria across every unit. Your submissions are marked by unit tutors, undergo internal verification, are externally moderated, and are formally ratified before the diploma is awarded.

Can I study around work and family commitments?

The diploma is designed to be flexible, allowing you to study from home around work, family and other commitments, and progress at a pace that suits your situation. Learners wanting a fast track online diploma often complete the course within 6 to 9 months, while others may take 9 to 12 months or longer.

Our system will generate a structured study schedule to guide your progress. Depending on your circumstances, you may also have the option to move ahead more quickly or request extensions or temporary study freezes if needed.

How much tutor support will I receive?

All learners receive tutor support throughout the diploma. Your diploma tutor provides guidance across the course and offers tutorials to help you stay organised and progress with confidence. Unit tutors vary by subject area and are responsible for marking assignments and giving feedback.

Tutor support is provided according to the arrangements for each unit and the qualification guidelines, so it is not unlimited and is not available 24/7.

Do I need any qualifications to enrol?

The minimum age to enrol is 16, though the course is generally recommended for learners aged 19 and over. No A Levels or prior Level 3 qualifications are required to start the diploma. However, most universities will expect applicants to have GCSE English, Maths and sometimes Science qualifications at grade 4/C or above, or accepted equivalents, depending on the degree course. If you do not yet meet these requirements, you can complete Functional Skills qualifications alongside or before starting the diploma. Alternatively, full online GCSE courses and exam bookings are available in subjects including GCSE Maths and GCSE English.

What qualifications do I need to work in veterinary or animal-related careers?

The qualifications required depend on the career path you choose. Many animal and veterinary-related professions require a university degree in subjects such as Veterinary Nursing, Zoology, Animal Science or Veterinary Physiotherapy. Veterinary surgeons in the UK must complete a degree approved by the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons before registering to practise.

Universities typically ask for a recognised Level 3 qualification such as A Levels or an Access to HE Diploma, alongside GCSE English, Maths and often Science qualifications at grade 4/C or above or accepted equivalents. Some courses may also ask for relevant work experience with animals or in veterinary settings.
