Candidates take three components in total: Paper 1, Paper 2, and a choice of either Paper 3A (USA) or Paper 3B (Global Politics). There is no coursework — the qualification is assessed entirely through written papers.
Paper 1 - UK Politics and Core Political Ideas
Topics
Democracy and participation, political parties, electoral systems and voting behaviour and the media, alongside the core political ideas of conservatism, liberalism and socialism.
Format
Written paper combining a source-based question, essay questions and a choice-based question on political ideas.
Paper 2 - UK Government and Non-core Political Ideas
Topics
The UK constitution, Parliament, the Prime Minister and executive, and relations between the branches of government, alongside one non-core political idea chosen from anarchism, ecologism, feminism, multiculturalism or nationalism.
Format
Written paper combining a source-based question, essay questions and a choice-based question on the chosen political idea.
Paper 3A or 3B - Comparative Politics (USA or Global)
Topics
